Fourth Station: Jesus is denied by Peter

Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard.  One of the maids came over to him and said, “You too were with Jesus the Galilean.”  But he denied it in front of everyone, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about!”  as he went out to the gate, another girl saaw him and said to those who were there, “This man was with Jesus the Nazarene.”  Again he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man!”  A little later the bystanders came over and said to Peter, “surely you too are one of them, even your speech gives you away.”  At that he began to curse and to swear, “I do not know the man.”  And immediately a cock crowed.  Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had spoken:  “Before the cock crows you will deny me three times.”  He went out and began to weep bitterly.–Matthew 26:69-75

I can easily identify with Peter and his lack of conviction.  I am a card carrying member of the people pleasing club.  I cringe when I think I have offended others or when my beliefs seem to contradict those of others.  Perhaps this is a good characteristic to have when trying to reach out to those in need, but it can be a real hindrance when you’re trying to stand for something in the face of conflicting opinions.  This is where Peter found himself, and this is where I often find myself.  How bout you?  If you find yourself rejecting Jesus in the face of criticism, be reminded that you are not alone in this struggle, but also seek God’s help.  He will give you what you need to stand firm for him.

Lord we are so easily influenced by the world.  We shrink back, we fail to stand for you.  Grow and strengthen in us a conviction that will withstand any assault on our relationship with you.  Let us proclaim with boldness our love for you.
